"Taiwan Election" Will Not Change the Fact of Taiwan Being Part of China's Territory
2004/03/27

On March 26, the so-called "Central Election Commission" of Taiwan announced the results of the election in Taiwan region. The controversy surrounding the election still remains unabated on the island. One competing party doubts the "assassination" on the eve of the election and holds strong suspicion on the outcome of the ballot. As a result, it claims that the election is unjust and unfair. It has appealed to "nullify the election" and held demonstration for the past few days. The current situation in Taiwan is very complex, sensitive and dangerous. Taiwan is a part of China and the people in Taiwan are our brothers and sisters of the same blood. When and if the situation spins out of control, it will jeopardize the law and order in the Taiwan region and endanger the fundamental interests of our Taiwan compatriots and the cross-Straits relations. That makes it impossible for us to be an indifferent on-looker.

The current turmoil in Taiwan has everything to do with the Chen Shui-bian authorities. Since Chen Shui-bian became leader of the Taiwan region, he has never stopped his willful pursuit of "Taiwan independence" scheme and spared no efforts to carry out separatist activities aimed at "Taiwan independence". He has not only pushed the cross-Straits relations step by step to the edge of a precipice but also caused serious political confrontations and social conflicts on the island. What Chen said and did in recent years has proved over and over again that he is an untrustworthy, unpredictable and unscrupulous ringleader of the "pro-independence" forces in Taiwan. Chen's longstanding separatist activities have posed a serious threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and even the whole world. It is imperative that all countries are clearly mindful of this.

The Chinese Government adheres to the basic principles of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems" on the question of Taiwan. We are committed with every sincerity to, and will do to the utmost of efforts for the peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question. However, we will never tolerate any form of separatist activities aimed at "Taiwan independence". The election in Taiwan is a local election in China. Whatever its outcome, it cannot and will not change the fact of Taiwan being part of China's territory.

China hopes that all the countries in the world will adhere to the one-China principle, support the great cause of China's reunification, and fully recognize the high complexity, sensitivity and great dangers of the current developments in the Taiwan region, maintain high vigilance against any attempt of the Taiwan authorities to split China.
