On February 20, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Federal Republic of Nigeria held a buffet reception to warmly celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria. (Date of establishment of diplomatic relations between the wo countries is February 10, 1971.) H.E. President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by H.E. Mr. Obong Ufot Ekaette, Secretary of Government of the Federation, H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu, Deputy Senate President, and H.E. Mr. Oluyemi Adeniji, Minister of Foreign Affairs, among other Nigerian guests and representatives of local Chinese community totaling almost 200 persons were present.

H.E. Mr. Wang Yongqiu, Ambassador of China, in his speech, recalled the path of the development of Sino-Nigeria friendly cooperative relations of the last 35 years, and expressed the readiness of the Chinese Government and people to work together with Nigerian side to continuously push the bilateral strategic partnership to a new high. H.E. Mr. Ekaette, representing the Nigerian President, in his remarks, extolled the level of bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly the visit by H.E. President Obasanjo to China in April 2005, which had promoted the establishment of Sino-Nigerian strategic partnership, a new high of the bilateral relations. H.E. Mr. Adeniji and H.E. Mr. Mantu added that the two countries highly cherished and attached great importance upon the bilateral friendly cooperative relations. Adeniji proclaimed that the Nigerian Government would resolutely stick to one-China policy.

Prior to the buffet, Ambassador Wang Yongqiu was interviewed by some major mass media of Nigeria on the topic of Sino-Nigerian bilateral relations.
