China Offers Peacekeeping Assistance to ECOWAS

The handover ceremony of assistance materials worth one million RMB yuan by the Chinese Government to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was held at ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria on 14 September 2004. Mr. Wang Yongqiu, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, and Mr. Chambas, Executive Secretary of ECOWAS were present at the ceremony.

In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Wang commended the ECOWAS for the significant contributions it had made to peace and stability in West Africa and said that China, as a friend of ECOWAS and its member states, hoped the assistance would help promote peacekeeping efforts in West Africa. Mr. Chambas, on behalf of ECOWAS, expressed sincere gratitude to the Chinese Government and called the international community for more unflinching support to the maintenance of peace and stability in West Africa.
